Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach

The rich heritage of the Cape Fear Coast dates back to early explorers who named Cape Fear for its rugged shoals and foreboding waters. The area was significantly involved in the Revolutionary, Civil and Second World Wars. Its historical legacy can be explored at local Civil War battlefields and numerous area museums. The Cape Fear Coast today is a busy port and a filmmaking Mecca.

From the northernmost tip of Carolina Beach to the southern extension of Fort Fisher, island life is distinguished by abundant leisure activities, stunning ocean views and a relaxed tropical atmosphere. Pleasure Island’s beaches were rated the cleanest on the North Carolina coast in 2003 and boast more lifeguards than any other East Coast beach. Located nearby is the newly renovated Greenfield Lake Amphitheatre, which features a loop for walking and jogging. From fishing to strolling to lounging on the beach, these island communities provide ample opportunities for fun in the sun.

Although outdoor recreation is second to none on Pleasure Island and Wrightsville Beach, the communities offer plenty of opportunities for educational enrichment as well. More than 22,000 local students are served by New Hanover County Schools, the third highest rated school district in the state. Fort Fisher is a major draw for history buffs interested in viewing the last major stronghold of the Confederacy and the largest earthen fortress in the South. Others will want to visit the North Carolina Aquarium shark tank and sea turtle exhibits or scour the islands for the rare Venus Flytrap.

Included in Pleasure Island’s seven and a half miles of pristine sandy beaches is the small, family-oriented community of Kure Beach. Kure Beach offers scenic views of the Cape Fear River, the Atlantic Ocean and Zeke’s Island estuarine complex. Beachwalk at Kure Beach, Sea Watch, Kure by the Sea and Ocean Dunes Forest are just a few lovely Kure Beach neighborhoods. Exciting destinations include the Kure Beach Fishing Pier and the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. The Fort Fisher/Southport Ferry provides breathtaking views of the Cape Fear River as it makes it journey from shore to shore.
Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach are home to plenty of appealing attractions of their own. Carolina Beach’s annual festivals - the Lights Holiday Flotilla and the Beach Blast Music Festival - are must-see events. The Pleasure Island Seafood, Blues and Jazz Festival also attracts hundreds of visitors each year. The annual Lumina Daze Festival and Castles & Scoops Sand Sculpting Contest are popular Wrightsville Beach events.
